Day 7 Check in: March Madness

Posted by Jen on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 @ 10:42 am

Well, here we are. Already a week into March Madness. I’ve been reading the comments on each check in post, and everyone has made awesome progress so far. Keep on pounding out the words, revising chapters, plotting and writing synopses! We have more prizes to announce starting tomorrow!

As for me, I’ve been having some writing woes so far this month. I have a project that I started for NaNo with 41k words that I wanted to work on and finish. I haven’t touched it since November, but I still managed to start out this month with a solid 1k and with good intentions. But then I hit a brick wall. Why? The plot isn’t right. I need to go back, evaluate and figure out the right direction here. I could keep writing in the current direction, but it would just be more wrong words. More words I’d have to throw away later.

But I still want to be writing. Even if it takes me only another day or so to work this out, I want to be writing new words on these days. So, I did a crazy thing and started working on another project. It’s a project I’ve been thinking about for over a year but have been too scared to write. It’s different than my other manuscripts. I never thought I was good enough to write it. I still don’t. But I probably never will, so I’m starting it now. It’s going to be my side project. The one I write just for me because I want to see if I can make this into a good story. And since these two projects are so different, I can go back and forth between them, at least for right now, until I get my feet back under me for AMPED.

Anyway, I’m counting word count progress on both manuscripts toward my March goal. So far only 3k, but I’m ready to get a lot done today!

I’m sure others will be able to relate, Jen, so thanks for being honest. And I have full faith that you ARE good enough to write this new book! I can’t wait to hear about it.

As for me, I had a really good week of writing and decided (ahead of time) that I would take today off. Looking forward to reading a good book today and getting back at it tomorrow.

I can sympathize with not feeling good enough to write a particular story. For me, it’s almost all of my stories (but my current WiP most of all, alas.) But yesterday I finished my second scene which puts me right on track for my goal. If I am diligent today and this week, I might even manage to exceed it! :)

(One of my captcha words: checkups. How fitting!)

Jen,
I think starting the new project is a great idea. My last two novels were worlds apart and I wrote them simultaneously. I’m glad I did, for many reasons. I’ve got one of those “I’m not smart enough to write this” projects on the back burner, too. Someday…

Today I wrote 1300 words. Very happy with how the WIP is going now that I have a good voice.

There was a children’s lit conference here this weekend. I didn’t attend, but got to enjoy many of the events surrounding.

Keep up the great work everyone. I’m looking forward to checking out your books, blogs and websites once this madness is over:-)

Here’s hoping you get your feet back under you for AMPED soon — and that the new writing gives you pleasure today.

I’m about a third of the way through the revision of the middle-grade novel I’m working on. My husband watched the kids yesterday and I unplugged for a while so I could just focus on the revision, which helped me accomplish a lot. Hoping for at least a solid hour of work today. Happy writing!

That’s interesting what you said about your NaNo project. I have one from 2008 that I wrote all 50k of, but the plot is all over the place and it just looks like it’s going to be a huge nightmare to edit.

I keep trying, but… I severely need to adjust the plot.

The one I’m working on right now, however, is going well. I did 800 words yesterday, just over what I aim for as my daily word count in order to hit my goal for March Madness.

Thank you so much for organising this, ladies. I didn’t realise just how helpful it would be. New goal every month! :)

Hang in there, Jen. Like Denise said you probably _are_ good enough to write…and the only one who can because the story is in you. Good luck with both your books, a great idea to do that!!

I wrote a new scene for Chapter Six of my YA. Going to carry on revising the whole chapter today, er, should I say tonight!

Good luck everyone. Enjoy your reading day, Denise! I have SPEAK next to me-decided to revisit an old favorite.

I spent some time today editing the stuff I’ve written over the last couple of day.

I’m up to six (out of twenty-five) scenes as of today.

I meant to write more, but I ended up doing several hours of research that I needed for my antagonist. I’m glad I did it, and more glad still that if I can keep writing even just one scene a day, I’ll definitely meet my goal!

Jen, my WIP is one of those I’m-not-good-enough-to-write-this ones… kinda daunting, but I do love it. Like you, I have another project I go to when this one’s not clicking for me.

No writing for me today. I have to be very intentional about taking a day off (because I’m the obsessive type). I’ll be roaring to go tomorrow! ;)

I thought I might get at least a bit of writing done today because I’ve done nothing of significance over the past couple, but… alas, nada. My own blog today says it all: “I would be unstoppable… if I could just get started.” ::sigh:: Surely this will be a better week.

Good luck with your new project Jen (and your old one too).

I started over this week. Sunday was a day for trying to figure things out. I made lots of notes, came up with a new sub plot, and I think (crossing fingers) that I know where I’m going now.

Wed morning. Is this the place to check in today. I’m a morning person, so post “yesterday’s” progress or NOT in the am.
Yesterday was a busy day for me at the flower shop…boss away, one girl sick, os a sub is the del person…funeral work to do, wedding consultation, counter, phone, everyday arrangements, etc etc etc…is that enough for the excuses why I didn’t get much writing done? However, I got home to emails and a crit. The crit led me to do a bit more tweaking on my pb.
When I had made changes, I made a timeline mistake/twist. So, that is fixed now. Few words, but great catch by a crit partner.
So on to today everyone.
Mona
