Some Good News, Please
Today, the publishing industry was fraught with bad news. It seems like a very, very bad time to be an unpublished writer seeking publication. Yay me. Of course, I also feel for those losing jobs.
However, I’m not going to get into the particulars on everything going down. If you haven’t heard, you can go to Publishers Marketplace or Galleycat to get the scoop.
Instead, I want to hear good news. If something great has happened in your life lately, please comment. And just to show you how serious I am about wanting to hear good news, everyone who comments will be entered into a drawing to win Naomi Novik’s HIS MAJESTY’S DRAGON, the first in the Temeraire series. Comments will be open until Friday at midnight EST, and the winner will be announced sometime during Saturday.

Good news? Well I hit 10K words on my rough draft
It’s a start.
I’ve got a copy of that book in one of my piles somewhere - the era that it is set is one of my favourite. I’m a big fan of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe Series, Patrick O’Brien’s Aubery-Maturin series and of course C.S Forester’s Hornblower series.
In fact, such a big fan the world I write in is at that technological level, just with dragons and goblins, minotaurs and magic mixed in.
And then I find Naomi Novik had written the Napoleonic Wars with dragons which, alas, makes my original idea not quite so original…
Good news, good news… Hmm. You’ve got me thinking. Unfortunately, I’m in the “query” phase, which means I’m probably going to be getting a lot of “Thanks, but no thanks” emails and letters pretty soon, but there will potentially be some partial requests, too.
Still, I’ve always been intrigued by Novik’s book since I heard about it, so I’d love to get a hold of a copy.
I had an incredible writing day yesterday. That’s something.
I don’t know if this is good news or not, but since I ended up at Penguin’s list of What to Give & What to Get because of this post, I’m tagging you in the meme I created from it. And keep your chin up. As long as people thirst for stories and as long as people are willing to tell them, there’s plenty of hope left for the industry.
My book is still coming out, despite the fact that its publisher is being “dismantled.” That’s good news!
Or at least, good enough that I sleep nights.
Diana, that is definitely good news. I’m really feeling for those authors who have gotten orphaned in all this.
Hm. Good news.
Well, I got all my materials in for the Golden Hearts. My first entry, so I’m nervous, but keeping my spirits high by reminding myself that I have another book that’ll work for next year’s contest, if nothing pans out this year. For some reason, all that feels like good news.
Hrm more news. Its my birthday - though I sometimes think that that is more depressing than good.
In news I consider good (or at least not bad) I’m starting a serial story - basically I plan to release once a week a new segment of the story. I fully expect that it’ll turn out badly written, full of cliches, bad dialogue and plot holes you can drive planets through, but it should be fun to do.
Kristin - Oooh, good luck! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Andrew - Happy birthday!!!
