TG2 Project Status

I’m done with the 50 pages for TG2!

TG2 Partial: YA Urban Fantasy
50 / 50 Pages (100%) DONE!

It needs quite a bit of editing, but the first draft is finally complete! This draft has served two purposes for me. First, it will be ready to be part of the a proposal package for Book 2 if my agent needs it when she begins submitting TG to editors. I know she wants to pitch it as a series so I wanted to have something ready if she needs it. Second, I also wanted to write a detailed synopsis for the book, but I figure a lot of details out by actually writing the book. This first 50 pages has allowed me to really flesh out the idea of where I wanted to go with Book 2. So, yay.

The synopsis is what I worked on today. I used my Digital Post-It notes to come up with a very detailed, complete outline. I worked on this for hours today, and here’s the finished product.

I’ve printed it out in basic text format, and I’ve got four pages of very rough plotting to work with. I also printed out my first 50 pages, and there’s just something so satisfying about seeing all those pages of words in hardcopy format.

Next Up: The first draft of a “prettier” synopsis based on my post-it notes and editing of the 50 pages.

What’s everyone else working on? How’s progress coming along for all the NaNo participants?

Wow, things are coming along nicely, huh? Go you! :)
I’ve actually started an interesting plotting exercise. I approach everything I write from a visual perspective–as if it’s a movie, or a TV show, or even a comic book. So, I was wondering how far back into the process I could use this approach.

I’ve decided to think of my current project like it’s a single season of a TV show, and what better model than Buffy, right? I’ve started dissecting Season 3 of Buffy (the first season I recognized a season-long arc) and outlining it like it’s a novel, just to see how the narrative flows.

I honestly think this is a legitimate exercise to work through the jumble of ideas and plot threads that have piled up, and not just a pathetic excuse to watch Buffy DVDs.

Yeah, things are coming along, but I’ve realized the synopsis is a bit wordy. I’ve been advised to cut it back to five pages. Yikes.

You don’t need an excuse to watch Buffy! But you’re right about the seasons. The first one wasn’t much in terms of an arc, but the other seasons read as a novel each to me. I’ve actually dissected Buffy for the purposes of writing Clash. I just hope I didn’t let too much of it bleed into the story because while I want it to have Buffy influences, I don’t want it to be a copy of the show. Fortunately, there are no vampires in sight.
