NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge Update

Posted by Jen on Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 @ 1:58 am

Last week, I signed up for the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge 2008. On Friday night, I received my genre and subject for the first round.

Genre: Comedy

Subject: Personal Trainer(s)

Agh! This might not seem like a tragedy to some, but I am most definitely not a comedy writer. I don’t think I’m particularly funny. Sure, every now and then, I can throw out a gem or two, but it’s rare. So, I am having a bit of what they call writer’s block on this one. At first, I was throwing out completely ridiculous scenarios about superheroes and genies. Oh, if only I had gotten fantasy, mystery, suspense, fairy tale or even romance. I think I could write a decent love story even though I haven’t attempted that since the age of twelve.

Luckily, my beta reader was able to give me a few suggestions, and that seemed to unclog my writing stopper. I’m still only a few hundred works in, and I’m not even sure the idea will end up working, but at least it is better than the blank page I’ve been staring at all weekend.

I have until this upcoming Friday to complete the story. I would love to have a rough first draft completed by tomorrow night so that my beta readers and I can read through a few times. Then, I’ll need to do some editing. With all that is left to do, I better get back to writing!
