mediabistro.com is one of the writing websites that I frequently visit. They have job postings, writing events, writing classes and workshops, discussion boards, helpful articles and much more.
I received an email from them today regarding a workshop called “The Secrets Behind Writing and Selling Your First Book” which is coming up next week in New York. It is a one-day workshop at a pricey $175, but it sounds interesting and potentially helpful. According to the email, aspiring authors can bring a cover letter for a novel and have it critiqued by the workshop leader, Sue Shapiro.
She will not only critique your cover letter but also supply valuable advice on generating ideas, picking genres, contacting agents and selecting a title. Apparently, there will be a couple of agents attending the last hour of the workshop as well. It’s a long shot to think that you could sell your novel to one of the agents at the workshop, but you never know. However, you certainly will make some valuable contacts in the publishing industry and get some real advice on how to get your first novel published.
