August 8 - Word Count 36,143

I have finally accepted the fact that I will not complete the first draft by September 1st as originally planned. I have self-discipline issues, and I tend to procrastinate and be lazy.

I do still plan on finishing the novel. I have MBA classes starting up again at the end of this month, so I am going to have to plan on completing the novel by the end of the year now. I’m not sure if I will have time to finish it up before then. I am going to include any major revisions in the deadline as well. Major revisions refer to scene additions/deletions or revamping a character or scene to suit the later flow of the story. I doubt I will be able to finish all the minor revisions by then, but if I start working hard on this again, I might be able to pull it off. We’ll see.

Anyway, I’m up to 36,143 total words now. Speaking of word count, this is also an issue. I am not sure I will be able to make it to 90,000 words with the story I have right now. It is more like 60-70,000 instead, I am guessing. That is much shorter than I would like. The standard length for mystery novels is 90,000 words/300 pages. But, this will be my first completed novel and if it has to be short, so be it.
