June 15 - Word Count 12,431

Yes! I was feeling a bit down about my writing skills after reading an extremely well-written J.D. Robb novel. But Joel gave me a pep talk tonight, made me more confident, and I’m pretty happy with tonight’s writing.

Granted, it still needs work, but what do I need to keep telling myself? It’s only a first draft. I can take it a step further and say it will only be my first fully completed novel, and while I would like it to get published, it probably won’t be. It takes lots of tries and lots of years to get that first novel published. That can be discouraging, but if I never write that first novel and that second novel, I’ll never make it to the one that actually does get published.

So, I shook off the pessimistic attitude, and got to business. I exceeded my daily word count, and I’m up to 12,431 words! I also did a bit of character development on my lead, the best friend and the love interest. I still need to get a bit more of that hammered out, but I’m on my way.

I also got back the answers I had for the police officer my friend knows, and that really helped me out a lot. I have a better idea of what goes into a crime scene, witnesses, statements, etc.

77,569 more words to go…
