Introduction

I’m doing it, and I’m setting a deadline!

I’ve taken about an entire year off of writing. This was nothing that was planned. It just kind of happened. Feeling somewhat inspired again, I’m deciding to do a bootcamp of sorts.

Every November, thousands of writers band together in the National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I think that’s a great idea and definitely something I would like to be part of in order to get the writing juices flowing. However, I don’t want to wait that long.

Instead, I’m developing my very own Summer Writing Challenge. I have three months to write a 90,000 word novel. This is actually just something I decided to begin today, June 4. My deadline is September 1 at 11:59pm, which gives me 90 days.

Why three months instead of one? Well, I do plan on enjoying the summer a bit. And while I love the idea of a one-month crazy fest, I think I’ll do something a bit more realistic that can give me some free time this summer. Also, I plan on writing a 90,000 page novel rather than a 50,000 page novel. I plan on slugging through it, and hopefully, coming out with the first draft of a book I will try to publish.

The plan is to write at least 1,000 words per day. If I do this, I will have the book completed by September 1. It may be a little rough around the edges, but I will have finally completed my first novel. And yes, it will be a mystery.
